Riding in BC on a rare sunny moment
The journey begins.... Join me on my solo 35,000 to 40,000 mile motorcycle ride as I search for adventure while publicizing the importance of regular breast cancer screening exams, raise money to help find the cause of this dreaded disease, and as I learn more about the people I meet along the way.
My name is Dave "Smiley" Clifton and I am a 62-year “young” adventurer. I am about to embark on an incredible motorcycle journey that I hope you will find both interesting and intriguing. Although I was born in Butte, Montana, I spent most of my time growing up in Southern California.
I attended undergraduate and graduate school at San Jose State and worked in Los Angeles and San Diego until our family moved overseas in 1995. During this period as a “road warrior”, we lived in Singapore for 5 years, London for 3 years and now going on our fourth year in Dubai.
In addition to Cruising for the Cure, I'm the managing director for Europe, Middle East, Africa, and Asia for Interval International, a leader in the vacation ownership industry. I have been in the business for more than 25 years, the last 6 with Interval. I love the fact that I still have a great deal of passion for the business after all these years.
When I approached my boss Craig Nash -chairman and chief executive officer - with the idea of riding my Harley across the country for the benefit of Susan G. Komen, I was overwhelmed by his support and enthusiam for what I am doing. He and the great team at Interval are 100% behind my fundraising campaign for this important cause that's touched me and so many others on a very personal level.
So thanks to Craig, I am looking forward to the next sixteen weeks, which promises to be an incredible adventure. I'll be raising money for cancer education, treatment, and research, working for Interval from the road, and meeting people all around the United States and Canada.
I am expecting the unexpected, so who knows if one day the call of work may be such that I have to park my bike and head back to work on another continent for a few days, but I will return to finish the ride. I do know that whatever happens, this will be an experience of a lifetime.
My family is pretty cool too! In addition to having an amazing wife, I am blessed with two of the best children in the world (my 31-year old son Brendon and my 29-year old daughter Kelly). I have also enjoyed an incredibly interesting 62 years so far and in my earlier life was even a surf and ski bum until the "reality of life" set in.
